Piggly Wiggly grocery stores (United States)
-
The Piggly Wiggly chain, created in Tennessee in 1916, had different locations in Colorado in the early Twentieth Century. Stores in Colorado appear to have been locally owned, and some of them initiated a self-service model. According to Harvey Ball, who managed local Piggly Wiggly stores from 1925 to 1931, the owners of the Piggly Wiggly franchise on the Western Slope were Mr. Wakefield and Dick Dowery.
A grocery store was in operation in Grand Junction at least from 1922, when the Grand Junction City Directory shows a store located at 554 Main Street. Paul Prinster worked at Piggly Wiggly in the early 1920’s (he later went on to found City Market with his brothers). The 1926 Grand Junction City Directory show that Piggly Wiggly had stores at both 160 and 608 Main Street.
According to Harvey Ball, Safeway bought out the Piggly Wiggly franchise locally in 1931, but the Piggly Wiggly stores seemed to have kept their name. The 1935 City Directory shows Piggly Wiggly stores at 608 Main Street and 725 N. 12th. In Grand Junction, at least, local Piggly Wiggly stores ceased to carry the name by 1939, when they no longer appear in the local directory.
