KOTO Community Radio News: Big drug bust stories
Three KOTO Community Radio newscasts, regarding the big drug busts, made by the FBI, during 1981, in Telluride, Colorado. Under-cover FBI agents were used to discover the suspects that were arrested for cocaine. KOTO news reporters include Jerry Greene, Barry Cook, Rita Robinson, and Nancy Craft. Dates of the recordings are: 5/27/81, 6/1/81, and 6/2/81. Each newscast is about 15-20 minutes long, total recording length is about 51 minutes. Other news includes the 1981 Telluride Jazz festival being cancelled, due to lack of funds. Street oiling and parking restrictions are also mentioned. KOTO Environmentally Speaking Show with Brain Peters & Jack Pera
A KOTO radio show, from Telluride, Colorado, called Environmentally Speaking. Dated July 5, 1989, Brian Peters interviews Jack Pera, a long-time Telluride local resident, photographer, environmentalist, and the president of the Sheep Mountain Alliance, about regional environmental issues. The Barlow creek area (outside of Rico, Colorado) and the sale of timber is discussed. Also mentioned are the Forest Service's plans for Gunnison, Grand Mesa, and the Uncompahgre forest areas. Jack also discusses the Division of Wildlife's plans to review their bear protection/hunting policies, and his concerns about the greenhouse effect and the current drought. Finally, Jack opposes the building of the new Mill Creek trail being considered. KOTO Friday: Jerry Greene interviews Jim Pettegrew
A KOTO Radio show, called Friday Live, that aired June 4, 1982. Jerry Greene interviews KOTO's weather man, Jim Pettegrew. Pettegrew talks about how he has been in Telluride fore 9 months and his impressions of living there. He discusses Wisconsin and his education received at the University of Wisconsin. Jim received a degree in Wildlife Ecology and went to medical school for 3 years. Jim's KOTO name is Stormy James. Jim then speaks about his love of sports, including skiing. He is a Nordic ski instructor. Pettegrew also enjoys running and will be running at the upcoming Imogene Pass run in September (for the 2nd time). Jim was attracted to Telluride because of it's remoteness, friendly locals, uncrowdedness, and steep terrain. Jim works at KOTO as an engineer. Recording length is about 30 minutes. Distant government and accountability to the people of Telluride is spoken of. This recording is muffled, at first, but becomes clear at the 48-minute mark. 13.
