: Carl Smith; He was born in Delta, Colorado and grew up just south of town. He came from a long line of musicians, going back to England, and he began playing music at an early age. He took piano lessons, practiced the violin, and learned the piccolo. He later played in circus bands, and in a military band during World War I. Born 1897.

: Carl Stranger; He was an Italian immigrant, one of several who lived on Pitkin Avenue in the early Twentieth century. He was the owner of Stranges Grocery on 232 Pitkin Avenue in Grand Junction, Colorado. According to US Census Records, he was a night watchman at the Denver and Rio Grande Roundhouse in 1900. By 1910, he was a grocer. Ship passenger lists show him arriving in the United States in 1898 under the name Carl Stranges. He was married to Sarah Stranger, also an Italian immigrant.
