-
Daniel Edward Telleen was born 17 February 1944 in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa to Gladys C. Sorenson and Vernon J. Telleen. At Prairie View High School, Telleen was a member of the 1962 Iowa state champion (class B) two-mile relay team. He graduated from Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska with a degree in Art Education. In 1969, after teaching elementary school art for three years in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Telleen relocated to Colorado.
In 1970, Telleen met fellow artists, Randy Milhoan and Jim Cotter in the fledgling community of Vail. The three colleagues became founders of the Summervail Workshop for Art and Critical Studies, a landmark art organization and cultural movement that helped put Vail on the map. Known popularly as Summervail Art Workshop (SAW), SAW became an important continuing education program for Colorado Mountain College.
In 1985, Telleen opened Karats, a “working jewelry store and gallery,” on East Meadow Drive in Vail. Karats has operated at the same location for nearly four decades. Telleen is acclaimed for his “distinctive custom jewelry designs” and has exhibited his work in galleries and museums internationally. Dan Telleen is a board member of the Summervail Art Workshop Legacy Project.
