Don Walter was a business a owner and member of the Education Committee of the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce which helped developed Colorado Mountain College.

Don Warren Burgess

He was born to Roy A. Burgess and Lily (Koontz) Burgess in Alamosa, Colorado. By 1930, when Don was six, the US Census shows the family living in Montrose, Colorado, where his father was an insurance salesman. His mother was a homemaker. There, Don attended the Johnson School. His parents divorced in 1935. US Census records indicate that Don continued to live with his father, who remarried to Jeanette McClain in Mesa County in 1937.
He attended the Lowell School and then Grand Junction Junior High School. Don attended Grand Junction High School from 1938 to 1942, where he was an all-conference left end in football. He also played basketball and played in the marching band. In his interview, he describes golf, which he played first at the Lincoln Park golf course, as his first love. He helped form the first GJHS golf team.
He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. He trained as a gunner for B-17’s and B-24’s before joining the 385th Bomber Group. He was stationed with the Eight Air Force in England, from where he flew bomber missions. He achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant and received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He went to Mesa Junior College (now Colorado Mesa University) from 1946 to 1948. He played on a Mesa College football team that won the conference championship. He also ran track and played on the college’s first golf team. He then went to the Los Angeles College of Optometry from 1949 to 1950, where he received his B.A. He married Bobbie Lou Young of California on September 4, 1947.

Don Welch

Don Welch was an Eagle County Commissioner from 1985 to 1993. Alongside fellow commissioners Dick Gustafson and Bud Gates, Welch was instrumental in the establishment of the High Altitude Aviation Training Site (HAATS) at the Eagle County Regional Airport. Welch is also a Vail realtor who enjoys "rolling art" in the form of vintage cars. Welch and fellow realtor, Doug Landin, founded Vail Automotive Classic car club in 2009. Don Welch, and his wife Shirley, who is a local historian and author, make their home in Eagle, Colorado.
