Dora (Pritchett) McPheters
-
She was born on a farm in a small town in Illinois. Her father was an invalid, crippled by rheumatoid arthritis, and walked with two canes. He passed away when Dora was five. Her mother died when she was six years old. She and her brother lived with an older sister until Dora was about 10, when they were placed in an orphanage in St. Louis. They stayed there for six months. During that time, when the nurses hit her little brother Jimmy, she attacked the nurses. A German couple from Illinois adopted them, and an aunt later took them in. The families that took them in often adopted them only for their labor. One family that she lived with allowed her to go to school as long as she kept up with her chores and got good grades. She became a school teacher in Illinois, and moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado to teach.
