Eddie "Ed" Hughes
-
He was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Robert E. Hughes and Delia Marguerite “Maggie” (Bresnahan) Hughes. He grew up in Weld County, north of Greeley. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker. He had a younger sister, Aleatha. He attended the La Grange, Hazelton, Pierce, and Slayton Schools in grades 1-8. He attended Nunn High School and Faulk High School for one year each.
He married Dora Melvina Gunn on November 29, 1928 at the Grant Community School. She was an educated woman who wanted to become a lawyer. The 1930 US Census shows them living and farming in Weld County, when Eddie was 26 years old.
Due to Dust Bowl conditions, they moved to Mesa County in 1937. Eddie’s father traded land in Weld County for land in Mesa County, allowing his son to move there under the Federal resettlement program for people fleeing the Dust Bowl. The family settled on 70 acres in the Hunter area, which they received from the government, and his children attended the Hunter School. He later bought 10 more acres and then 40 acres for his son.
Eddie planted grapes, grain, hay, and raised pigs. His wife raised turkeys and chickens. They used water from the Grand Valley Canal, which they purified with a homemade system. He worked at the ice company in Grand Junction to earn enough money for a work truck. The 1940 Census shows the Hughes living in the Rhone District with their three children. He later raised cattle and had his own brand.
For recreation they went to dances and had picnics. The kids played in the Grand Valley Canal. Eddie played catcher on a baseball team. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and, when he was younger, searching for arrowheads on Pinon Mesa. When the house burned down in 1968, they sold the farm.
