Edith Marie (Huffer) Sisac
-
She was born to Edward Huffer and Edna Kathryn (Bowman) Huffer in the Pomona area of Mesa County, Colorado. Her father was a rancher and her mother was a homemaker. Her family owned a slaughter house, which had been started by her grandfather Charles Bowman, across from the Durham Stockyards. Their ranch was on the River Road between Grand Junction and Fruita.
She attended the Pomona School for ten years. She walked two miles to school, in part because poor roads made driving impossible. For her junior and senior years she rode her bicycle to Grand Junction High School, where she was involved in Dramatic Club, Glee Club, and Dramatic Club plays. She graduated in 1937. While still in school, she worked at the Mesa Lakes Resort, a lodge on the Grand Mesa owned by the Sisac family.
She married Russel Sisac on October 3, 1938, when she was eighteen years old. Together, they helped run the Sisac family's Mesa Lakes Resort. They also ran the Grand Mesa's first ski area, the Mesa Lakes Ski Run and later, the Mesa Creek Ski Area.
The family lived part-time in Grand Junction after World War II. She became a realtor and owned and operated Reliable Realty from 1977 until 1994. The local American Business Women's Association named her Woman of the Year in 1990.
She volunteered for the United Methodist Women, the Alzheimer's Association, St. Mary's Blood Bank, and Red Cross. She enjoyed fishing and fiber arts. She died at the age of 96.
