: Elsie A. (Nipko) Cockrell; She was born and raised in Idaho Springs, Colorado and later in Castle Rock. Her parents Elbert and Mannie Nipko were first generation Americans, and her grandparents were all from Germany. Her father was a machinist in a silver mine in Idaho Springs and later worked in a mine in Castle Rock. In high school, Elsie was a helper in a beauty shop. She later bought the beauty shop and earned enough money to get through college. After college, she became a school teacher. During the depression, she and her husband George Cockrell (a mail carrier), lost all of their money.
