She was born in Minnesota to Charles Anderson and Caroline (Oberg) Anderson. Her father was a Norwegian immigrant and farmer. Her mother was a homemaker. While in Minnesota, she took a teacher’s training course at age 17. After a short stint teaching in Minnesota, she moved to Denver, Colorado and took a business course. She decided to go back to teaching and did so at Skull Creek, near Dinosaur, Colorado, in 1922. There she met cowboy Deward E. Campbell and married him in Uintah County, Utah in 1923. US Census records indicate that they had one child.
She became a country school teacher of over 35 years. In addition to Skull Creek School, she taught in the Castle Park School in Yampa Canyon, in what is now Dinosaur National Monument, at the Brown’s Park School, and at the Community Park School. She often had to improvise, as the schools didn’t have basic amenities.
She owned the Jarvis Ranch in Brown’s Park in Utah, which had been a hideout for outlaws. She attended the Lutheran Church.
