Florence (Bryant) Walker
Florence Bryant Walker graduated from Appleton Consolidated High School in 1915 and took teacher training courses at the Hoel Business College (which later became Ross Business College). According to Walker, at the age of 18, she took her first teaching job, and spent the 1916-17 school year teaching up at the Coates Creek School in Glade Park, Colorado. During the Women of Western Colorado presentation at the Palisade Library on June 24, 1982, presenters identified Walker's first school as the Road Canyon School. It's seems probable that Walker taught at the Road Canyon School just after the Coates Creek School, ending in 1919.
Florence (Eaden) Shambeau
She was born in Washington State, in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Her father was a coal miner and a carpenter who built houses. After her mother passed away, her father married again, and the stepmother had no place in the house for Florence. She lived with an uncle until she was 10, and then became an orphan who moved all around Washington. She did not receive much education. She was married twice, first to Harold H. Cook in 1910, and then to Fred Shambeau. Harold Cook was a grocery store owner and a farmer, and Florence helped him with raising beans, hogs, and other crops and animals. As a young woman, she was a seamstress. After her marriage she was a homemaker who cooked and sewed for her family and boarders. With her marriages, she lived all around the West, including Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
