Gustaf Robert Gustafson
He was born in the Globeville neighborhood of Denver, Colorado to Carl Herman Gustafson and Alma Bernhardina Gustafson, Swedish immigrants. His father was a laborer on the railroad and in city parks, and his mother was a homemaker. He grew up in a Swedish neighborhood and was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church. The 1920 US Census shows the family living at 4809 Wyandot Street. He started working as an office boy for the Public Service Company on September 2, 1919, at the age of fourteen, a job he began shortly after graduating from the 8th grade. While working for Public Service, he went to night school for eight years in order to achieve the equivalent of a high school diploma, attending the Emily Griffith Opportunity School from 1920-28. In 1929, he began attending the University of Denver School of Commerce in the evenings. He worked toward a degree in administration but did not achieve it. At the same time, he took utility accounting through Public Service. He also played the violin, saxophone and drums in a dance band. By 1930, he was working as an accountant for the Public Service Company. He married Lorna Van Pelt in Salida on October 10, 1931. They moved to Grand Junction sometime in September of 1933. He came to Grand Junction as a Senior Accountant for Public Service and was transferred to gain division experience under division manager Charley Rump. He also continued his studies in administration at Mesa College. He later served as the Assistant Chief Clerk and then as the Chief Clerk. He was a member of the Wiseman’s Club, the Kiwanas, the Masons, a YMCA youth leader, a member on the World War II ration board, and a member of various school boards in Mesa County. He also served on the Mesa County School District Reorganizaton Committee, which resulted in the merger of districts and the formation of Mesa County Valley School District #51. He and his wife lived on the Redlands.
