: Gwendolyn (Peacock) McKee; She was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, at a home on the southeast corner of the intersection of 4th Street and Ouray Avenue. Her parents divorced when she was young, and her mother worked at the Stratmore Hotel in Salida, which was owned by an aunt and uncle. Upon the hotel’s sale, she and her mother moved back to Denver, but returned to Salida so that her mother could work in the Rainbow Hotel, which her uncle had purchased. Gwendolyn sometimes worked the desk at eleven years old. She finished school at East High School in Denver, and then got a job with the telephone company. She went to Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, where she met her husband Donald Wilson McKee. They married in 1927, but later divorced.
