Harold V. Zimmerman
He was born to Charles and Nettie Zimmerman in McPherson, Kansas in 1903. Charles was a farmer and Nettie a homemaker. The family moved to the Appleton area of Mesa County, Colorado in 1907, when Harold was four years old. The family then moved to Clifton in 1913, near the Cross Ranch, and lived there until 1919. During that time, he attended the Clifton School. He worked on his family’s farm and those of others, picking and packing apples, and thinning and weeding sugar beets. His family later moved to North 7th Street in Grand Junction, where they had a 10 acre farm near Orchard Avenue. He attended Grand Junction High School before leaving Grand Junction to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder for two and a half years. He returned home to work in the Grand Valley National Bank until it was shuttered in 1933, during the Depression. He worked briefly as the bookkeeper for the Mesa County Treasurer, then as a bookkeeper for the Grand Junction City Manager. He was elected County Assessor in 1946 and occupied the position until 1950. He then worked as treasurer for the Grand Junction School District, and was involved in the consolidation into Mesa County Valley School District 51. In 1961, he became the manager of the Mesa County Teachers Federal Credit Union. He married Lela (Sparks) Zimmerman in 1927. They were married by Dean Haggard of the First Christian Church. *Photograph from 1923 Grand Junction High School yearbook.
