Horace Jay Wubben
He was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado to John Wubben, a German immigrant, and Martha Wubben of Illionis. He was raised in Paonia on a fruit farm. 1920 US Census records show him living in Paonia and working as a school teacher when he was 27 years old. By the 1930 census, he was working as the superintendent of a school district there (presumably Paonia's local district). Dr. Wubben served as president of Mesa College from 1937-1963 (now Colorado Mesa University). According to oral history interviewee Mary Rait, he was "a sympathetic, kind gentleman who always had an open door in his office, who worked hard keeping good relationships with the community, with community groups, as well as college alumnae and college groups." According to former Mesa College employee William Hartman, Wubben had a large hand in the purchase of land along North Avenue that enabled the college to eventually move there and build a new home for the school. He married Irene V. (Hazlett) Wubben in Paonia in 1919. She helped start the Clifton Library, and had a hand in the early Mesa County Public Library system. They lived for many years at 1048 Rood Avenue in Grand Junction.
