Ida Leota (Underwood) Clark

She was born in Grand Valley, Colorado (now known as Parachute) to James L.D. Underwood and Adelia (Gilmare) Underwood. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a homemaker. Adelia was James Underwood’s second wife. He was a Civil War Veteran who had fought for the Union. They had arrived in Battlement Mesa in 1902.
The 1910 US Census shows the family living in Grand Valley, when Ida was two years old. She is shown to have six older brothers and sisters living with her, with her older sister Nellie working as a school teacher. Ida attended the Battlement Mesa School for eight years, Grand Valley High School for four years, and Ross Business College in Grand Junction for one year.
She moved to Grand Junction in 1926, when she was about eighteen years old, and lived there for the majority of her life. She married Floyd Leon Clark on June 12, 1932 in Rifle. They had one child. He was a painter for the Veterans Administration Hospital. She worked as a secretary for the Biggs-Kurtz Lumber Company from 1928 to 1966.
She and her husband moved to the Redlands in 1933. They relocated to California during part of World War II, in line with her husband’s service, but returned to their home in the Redlands. US Census records show them living at 2359 Broadway.
According to her obituary, she was a charter member of the Redlands Community Church. She a member of the Sigman Alpha Sorority, Ladies of the Elks, bridge clubs, and was a Cub Scout leader. She died at the age of seventy-seven and is buried in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery.

She grew up in Fruita, New Mexico, and in the Meeker area. She is the daughter of Guy Snook, who grew up in Snooks Bottom, near Fruita.
