Ira Howard Mitchell

He was a conductor on the West End of the Colorado Midland Railroad in the early 20th century, working between Leadville and Cardiff. He met his wife, Marcia (Willits) Mitchell, while working on the Colorado Midland in Basalt, Colorado. He later worked for the Central Illinois Railroad.

Ira James Caley

He was born in Joplin, Missouri to James W. Caley and Myrtle M. (Mixson) Caley. His father was a Native American from New Mexico and his parents were farmers. He had two younger sisters and a younger brother. The family moved to Cave Junction, Oregon in 1947, when he was about a year old. There, he grew up on a farm and in a farm house that lacked running water or electricity. He was in charge of much of the farm work during this time, as his father was often absent.
He attended Cresswell Grade School. The family moved to the town of Springfield, Oregon. He attended Cottage Grove Union High School and Springfield High School, where he was active in football, track and field, and gymnastics. He dropped out in his sophomore year in 1963 after committing petty larceny.
He joined the Marine Corps at the age of seventeen on August 25, 1963. While in the Corps, he obtained his GED. He was stationed in San Diego, CA; Camp Pendleton, CA; Subic Bay, Philippines; Camp Hansen, Okinawa; and Vietnam. He fought in the Vietnam War from 1964-1966, serving with the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines. He began as a Forward Observer during an amphibious landing. He often went out on patrol seeking enemy combatants. He served one full tour, signed a six month extension, and at the end of the extension got a chest wound and chose not to extend again. He attained the rank of E4.
He married in 1966. He and his wife had three children. He joined the reserves and served for 12 years, attaining E7 status. He obtained an electronics associate degree from Boise State University in 1975. He moved to Colorado in 1975 to work for the Bureau of Land Management. Though his employment was terminated in 1976, he liked the area and chose to stay.
He worked for Slope Enterprises from 1976-1979, selling appliances, for Intermountain Printing from 1979-1980 on office machine repairs, for CAPCO from 1980-1982 as a plant manager, and for Dixson Inc from 1982-1983 as a plant manager. Starting in 1982, he actively sought to make peace with his time in Vietnam after having avoided it for years. He was a member of the Elk, the Moose Lodge, and the Vietnam Veterans Association.

Ira Redington

Ira Redington was in an orphans’ home as a child and the Miller family took him in to raise him at age 11 or 12 in Lafayette, CO. He moved to Erie from Lafayette in 1941. He and his wife, Dottie, owned and operated the Northport Store northeast of Erie from 1942 until 1972.
