He was born in Missouri. US Census records show him living with his parents and siblings in Elbert, Colorado by the age of 18, in 1880. He was an early settler of Delta County, Colorado, and helped to develop water resources on the Grand Mesa, including the Reed Reservoir (named for him). The 1910 US Census lists his occupation as reservoir superintendent. He worked for the Surface Creek Ditch and Reservoir Company for 24 years.
A political activist and mentor who founded the Common Decency Coalition, the first LGBTQ+ organization in Western Colorado. He also worked for the Western Colorado AIDS Project. He died in 2018. There is a scholarship in his name.
