Joseph Alexander Knox Crawford

A Western Slope pioneer, one of Grand Junction's founders, and builder of Crawford Addition, where he had a brick factory. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His wife was Indjanne Sophia "Jennie" Ernsten. They had four children. The 1910 US Census shows them living at 537 Lawrence Avenue, which was also located in the Crawford Addition (now the Riverside Neighborhood).
According to Mary Plaisted, who lived in the Riverside Neighborhood, three of Crawford's daughters became teachers: Maude, Genevieve, and Vivian.

Joseph Balliger

A Swiss immigrant and cabinet maker who lived in Telluride, Colorado in the 1880’s. He sailed on the Labrador from France, and arrived in New York City on March 21, 1883. The ship’s passenger list shows his occupation as carpenter. He married Eliza Bachman, also of Switzerland, in Montrose in 1886. He became a U.S. Citizen in 1903. During the Great Depression, he and his family suffered great hardship.

Joseph Beranek

Joe was born in Lafayette, CO on March 5, 1923. He married Betty Shapowal on January 14, 1950 and they had two sons. Joe Served in the US Army from March 12, 1943 to November 1, 1945 as a Sergeant in the 777th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion of the 6th Armored Division. Joe then worked as a custodian in the Boulder Valley School District until retiring in December 1987. Joe was also a member of the Lafayette Volunteer Fire Department.

"Joseph Blair Brown, 91, of Topeka, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. He was born Jan. 28, 1921 in Greeley, Colo., the son of Harry and Eva (Daniels) Brown.
Joe was the grandson of pioneers who settled in the San Miguel Valley of Colorado. Joe was raised in Telluride and Redvale, Colo., where he met his childhood sweetheart, Elsie Ross, whom he would eventually marry.
Joe served four years in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war, he graduated from Colorado State University (Aggies) in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy. Joe married Elsie immediately following his graduation, and they were married for 62 years, until Elsie’s death in December of 2011.
They lived and raised their family in the Denver area beginning in 1949. Joe was a soil scientist for the federal government, and his work was instrumental in the development of statepParks in the western region of the U.S. After his retirement at age 55, Joe farmed 160 acres of winter wheat in Adams County, Colo. Elsie and Joe moved to Topeka in 1998 in order to be closer to their family.
Joe is survived by his son, Tim (Anita) Brown and their family, Brian (Bree), David and Cassie; daughter, Melinda (Bill) Donovan and their family, Rosie (Pat) Rourke, Kerry (Spencer) Norton, Chuck Donovan, great-granddaughter, Maisie Rourke, and a great-grandchild Norton expected in Feb. 2013; daughter, Eva (Lynn) Curtis and their family, Lucy and Leah Curtis, Alex (Becca) Jamrozek and great-grandchild Brandon.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents; six siblings; and his wife, Elsie.
As were his wishes, Joe was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at First United Methodist Church-Klasse Chapel at 6th and Topeka Blvd. He will be inurned with his wife at Lone Tree Cemetery in Telluride, Colo. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Joseph B. Brown, to the Colorado State University Foundation, PO Box 1870, Ft. Collins, CO 80522. Joseph Christopher O'Mahoney

A Democratic politician who served four terms as a Senator for Wyoming. He was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in November of 1884. He attended Cambridge Latin School in his youth, and later went to Columbia University in New York City. He worked as a reporter in Boulder, Colorado, where he met his wife Agnes Veronica O’Leary in 1913. He later moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming to be the City Editor of the State Leader. There, he made connections with Governor John B. Kendrick who took him to Washington, D.C. as his executive Secretary. While in Washington, he attended Georgetown University Law School and graduated in 1920 with a BA of Law. He worked for a time as a lawyer in Cheyenne. He steadily became more involved with Democratic politics and in 1933 was appointed to the U.S. Senate by Governor Leslie A. Miller after Senator Kendrick passed away.

Joseph Distel

Joe Distel arrived in Denver, CO in 1922 with his family and then they moved to Lafayette, CO in 1933 to farm. Joe married Lois Schofield on June 22, 1939. They opened the Distel’s Motor Service in Lafayette, CO in 1945, which was in business for about two years. Joe then formed a construction company with a couple friends and built homes in Lafayette and Denver. The construction company was dissolved in 1949. Joe then went to Arnold Auto in Boulder, CO and became a car salesman. He quit Arnold Auto in 1951 and bought Miller Ranch. Joe farmed until 1967. He sold the farm for development and bought Lafayette Elevator Co., which he then sold in 1971.
