He was a rancher and a dude rancher in the Meeker, Colorado area. He was born to a German immigrant and landscape architect father, and a French-American mother in Indiana, on the shore of Lake Michigan. He lived there until he was twelve years old, when he ran away from home. He went to Oklahoma where he was a self-described horse wrangler in Indian Territory. He also worked in Texas and New Mexico as a ranch and cattle hand. He then served in World War I in the US Army's Second Division, under John Lejeune. He survived a mustard gas attack during the war, and was also injured. After the war he went to New Mexico and then came to Rio Blanco County, Colorado where he ranched.
