Kevin Foley
Kevin Richard Foley was born 11 January 1955 at Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts to Richard V. and Terese L. Foley. He was number two of six children (four boys and two girls). Foley was raised in Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated from St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury in 1973. St. John’s had a strong college prep curriculum and Foley excelled academically. He earned a National Merit Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which is a nonprofit organization that shines “a spotlight on brilliant students.” Foley also played basketball and was active in the Student Council, the Parish Catholic Youth Council and other community organizations. Between 1973 and 1975, Kevin Foley attended College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He worked in Worcester and Cape Cod until relocating to Vail in November 1979. In 1987, Foley earned a certificate from the Culinary Institute of America in the culinary arts. Foley created a legacy in restaurant management and lodging hospitality during his many years in Vail. Highlights include managing the Cook Shack at Mid-Vail and functioning as the General Manager of the Red Lion on Bridge Street. Between 2000 and 2014, Foley also served as resident manager of The Lifthouse condominiums. Today, Foley helps pilot Bart & Yeti’s, the landmark Lionshead restaurant, alongside Dennis Foley, his youngest brother. Kevin Foley served on the Vail Town Council for twenty-three years. His town council terms of service: 1995 to 2001, 2009 to 2013 and 2015 to 2023. In his inaugural town council bid in 1995, Foley was the top vote-getter. The 1995 race featured “the Fabulous Four,” which was a collection of young, “working-class” men whose hallmarks included “fair, honest and open” values. Foley was well known for campaigning via countless one-on-one discussions, a handshake and a minimum of expense. In 2015, Foley spent $3.86 on his campaign and $3.25 in 2019. During the latter election, he again garnered the most town council votes. In 2014, Kevin Foley was elected to the Vail Recreation District and the term ran through 2018. Characteristically, Foley received the most votes and served on its Board of Directors. In 1995, Foley represented the Town of Vail while serving on the Board of Directors for the Eagle County Regional Transportation Authority. In this capacity, Foley steered the ECO Trails Program subcommittee and was instrumental in establishing an Eagle County bike and hiking trail system that runs from Vail Pass to Glenwood Canyon. In 1991, Kevin Foley cycled from Copper Mountain to Vail to Leadville and back to Copper (100+ miles) in the Courage Classic Super Tour fundraiser. During this effort, Foley raised $48,000 for Children’s Hospital in Denver. He was a 24-year participant in this altruistic event. The Foley brothers, Kevin and Dennis, have coordinated a youth basketball program at Red Sandstone Elementary School since 1991. In honor of their coaching efforts and volunteer dedication to eastern Eagle County youth activity, the Red Sandstone gym was christened Foley Fieldhouse in 2019. Foley noted: “My time at the school is one of the best things in my life.” In addition to being a life-long Boston Red Sox fan, Foley enjoys reading, cycling, golf and snowshoeing. Kevin Foley’s Vail-born niece and nephew fondly joke about having three parents; thus, it is no surprise that Foley also enjoys spending time with his family.
