Marka Webb Moser was born 24 May 1940 to Barbara Shove Palmer and Joel A.H. Webb in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Marka Webb graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School and earned her teaching credentials from the University of Colorado in Boulder. As a child and youth, she skied Aspen, Winter Park, Arapahoe Basin, Vail and Ski Cooper, plus several areas that are no longer in operation including Climax Ski Area, Pikes Peak Ski Area and Ski Broadmoor. In 1965, the Webb family stayed at Pepi’s when Bridge Street still had a dirt surface. The family fell in love with Vail and Moser’s uncle, sports broadcast journalist Bud Palmer, bought one of the first condominiums at All-Seasons from Rod Slifer.
In 1969, Marka Webb married Kris Moser, who was a wildlife biologist and officer with the Colorado Division of Wildlife. The young family jumped at the chance to transfer to the Minturn district. Marka served as a permanent substitute teacher in the fledgling Vail school system (consisting of three full-time teachers) and coordinated volunteers to oversee extracurricular activities such as music, art and P.E. Eventually, she covered education for local newspapers and was trained as a photojournalist by Jack Affleck. In the early days, Moser also worked at the Mug Shoppe by the Covered Bridge where its owner’s, George “The Skipper” Knox and wife Ella, helped keep an eye on the Moser’s two young daughters, Barbara and Mary Catherine. The Mosers bought their first home in the Buffehr Creek West Condominiums from brothers Dave and Rob Garton. Sons Michael and Matthew Moser were born in Vail.
In her Vail Valley Voices oral history, Marka Moser recalled that the annual rummage sale (Eagle Valley Community Fund) was her first community service effort. She has been a board member for a staggering number of nonprofit organizations including the Buddy Werner League, an affordable youth ski race organization named for the late Olympian who was also Moser’s college friend. Through the Eagle Piney Water Protection District and similar organizations, Marka Moser has been instrumental in protecting water rights of Vail and Eagle County. Additionally, Moser has found time to participate in book clubs, the local women’s hockey league and the locally famous Happy Hikers club. In February 2023, Marka Moser was named recipient of the 2023 Vail Trailblazer Award by Vail Town Council.
