Artist in Residence: Jessica Scriver
As Mesa County Libraries 970West Studio Artist in Residence, Jessica Scriver created illustrations using an encaustic etching technique. The illustrations tell the story of a baby yak that is adopted by a new family and remembers her mother in the cycle of fiber production.

- In a retrospective video covering her period as Artist in Residence at 970West Studio in Mesa County Libraries, Jessica Scriver talks about her use of encaustic painting to illustrate the story of an orphaned, baby yak (in collaboration with a local author). She discusses the encaustic painting workshop that she gave as part of her residency, and the experience it gave to attendees who might not otherwise have access to an involved artistic process. She recalls the library storytime during which children got to hear the yak storybook and to view the illustrations, to view the actual baby yak upon which the story is based, and to weave yak fur into bracelets. She speaks about letting members of the community engage in the encaustic painting process during her open studio hours at 970West Studio. She credits her residency with giving her the time and structure she needed to see her art project from start to finish.
