Real estate appraisal card. 115 E. 2nd Street, lots 9 & 10, block 31, in Salida, Colorado. A different two-story building is shown on the 1945 Sanborn fire insurance map. The Chaffee County Assessor reports a 1957 year of construction for this building. The 1961 city directory shows that the building contained doctors' offices: Edward C. Budd, physician and surgeon; C. Rex Fuller, physician and surgeon; and Harry T. Ostrum, dentist. At the time of the 1981 historic buildings survey, the offices of Dr. Rowland, a dentist, and West Central Mental Health were located here. The building now houses a local radio station. Real estate appraisal card. 121 E. 2nd Street, lot 8 & part of 9, block 31, in Salida, Colorado. A bake house (set back from the street) is the only structure shown on this parcel on the 1893 Sanborn fire insurance map. The front part of this building was erected in front of and attached to the bake house at the street line between 1893 and 1898. The 1898 Sanborn identifies the building as a grocery store. By 1904, the building housed a paint and wallpaper store with a tin shop in the rear and a paint shop in a separate building to the rear. The 1905-06 city directory lists the People's Paint and Wall Paper Company at 121-23 E. 2nd Street. James L. Pearce and John F. Erdlen were the proprietors. William G. Morris provided tin and sheet iron work. The shop carried wallpaper, moldings, oils, varnishes, paints, and glass, and offered sign writing, paper hanging, painting, and decorating. The paint and wall paper store of Robert N. Pherson was listed here in the 1911-12 city directory. A paint and wallpaper store was still located here according to the 1914 Sanborn map. By 1922-23, the plumbing and heating shop of Eugene W. Tucker was housed in the building. He was listed here in the 1930-31 city directory and Lhe building was identified as a tin and plumbing shop on the 1945 Sanborn fire insurance map. The 1951 and 1961 city directories show Salida Plumbing and Appliance Company here; Edward H. Mahe was its president. This building was apparently part of the Salida Mountain Mail office at the time the Salida Downtown Historic District nomination was prepared in 1983. Real estate appraisal card. 124 E. 2nd Street, lot 20, block 22, in Salida, Colorado. This building was erected between 1888 and 1890, according to Sanborn fire insurance maps. The 1890 and 1893 maps identify this building as a dwelling. In 1893 it is shown as a doctor's office. The 1898 through 1914 maps show this as a dwelling. An office was shown in the building on the 1929 and 1945 Sanborn maps. The 1903-04 through 1922 city directories list the office and residence of Dr. Jessine M. Hartwell at this address. Manuscript returns for the 1920 Census revealed that Dr. Hartwell was then sixty-six years old and a native of Massachusetts. She listed her occupation as homeopathic physician. In 1961, an engineering and surveying firm was housed in the building: Robert Harrison and Associates. Real estate appraisal card. 125 E. 2nd Street, lots 6 & 7, block 31, in Salida, Colorado. According to Sanborn fire insurance maps, this building was constructed between 1890 and 1893. Maps and city directories from 1893 through at least 1951 show that the building was divided into two parts on the first floor, generally addressed as 125 and 127 E. 2nd Street. A variety of businesses were located in this building over the years, with no long-term tenants. In 1893 and 1898, the west section housed a millinery while the east part was used as a dwelling. The 1904 Sanborn map showed a wallpaper store at number 125 and a second hand store in number 127. Ramey Brothers (painting, paperhanging, and wall paper) was listed at 125 in the 1903-04 city directory. The proprietors were Cornelius E. and George L. Ramey. The 1905-06 city directory lists the Chaffee County Machine Shop at 125 E. 2nd Street. Charles Briggs was the owner of the firm, which manufactured novelties and all kinds of machinery and repaired safes, cash registers, and bicycles. Mrs. Adelia Wilson offered furnished rooms on the upper floor, which was known as the Burrington Block. Mrs. Meda Mahan, a dressmaker, lived and pursued her trade on the upper floor. In 1909, a sewing machine store (the Singer Sewing Machine Company) was in number 127. The office of George E. Baldwin, justice of the peace, was located in number 125 in 1909 and 1911-12. The Salida Wall Paper Company occupied number 127 in 1911-12. A.H. Nordstrom and Mrs. Mary Henri were the owners, with Julian Henri as the manager. The 1914 Sanborn map reported an office in number 125 and a wall paper and paint store in number 127. The wall paper store of John 0. Pearce was housed in number 127 according to the 1922-23 city directory. In 1927-28 the shoe repair store of F.P. White was housed in number 127. The 1929 Sanborn map, showed two unidentified stores. In 1930-31, Bernard Bement offered furnished rooms (presumably including the second floor), and W. Val Benedict's shoe repair shop was in number 127. The 1951 city directory showed the Chandler Fixit Shop at number 125 (Clyde C. Chandler, owner) and Jack's Barber Shop at number 127 (Jack Merica, owner). The addresses are not listed in the 1961 city directory; this building having become part of the Salida Mountain Mail newspaper operation by that time. Real estate appraisal card. 130 E. 2nd Street, lots 21 & 22, block 22, in Salida, Colorado. This building was erected between 1898 and 1904, according to Sanborn fire insurance maps. The Assessor's 1900 year of construction could be correct. The building was addressed as 132 E. 2nd Street on 1904 through 1945 Sanborn maps. The 1903-04 and 1905-06 city directories indicate that Mrs. Josephine Hill offered furnished rooms in this building. Mrs. Catherine Fagan, a forty-nine year old widow was keeping this rooming house according to 1920 manuscript Census returns. She had immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland and was a naturalized citizen. She had four lodgers at the time of the Census: two railroad workers, a baker, and a grocery store salesman. Mrs. Amalia Pauly (the widow of Harry M. Pauly) operated the house in 1922-23. The 1927-28 and 1930-31 city directories stated that William C. Keim owned and resided in this building. Mr. Keim operated the wall paper and paint store across the street at today's 131 E. 2nd Street. Members of the Keim family continued to live here and rent out lodgings through at least 1961: in 1951 W.C. Keim was listed, while in 1961, Mabel M. Keim was here. Real estate appraisal card. 131 E. 2nd Street, lot 5, block 31, in Salida, Colorado. The oldest part of this building was constructed between 1883 and 1886 as a dwelling set back from E. 2nd Street. Sanborn maps for 1886 through 1898 continue to identify it as a dwelling. The northern (front) part of the building was erected between 1898 and 1904. Sanborn maps for 1904 through 1945 show this building addressed as 133 E. 2nd Street. The 1903-04 city directory reported that Mrs. Lula E. Spencer resided here and pursued her trade as a milliner. Amos P. Slater operated a blacksmith shop in the rear portion of the building. The 1904 Sanborn map shows the northern portion of this building in use as a harness shop and the south serving as a dwelling. In 1909 the Christian Science Hall and Reading Room was housed in the building. The 1914 Sanborn map shows a cobbler in the building. The 1922-23 through 1930-31 city directories list the wall paper business of William C. Keim at this address. The 1945 Sanborn map indicates that a wall paper and paint store was located in the building. The 1951 and 1961 city directories list Martin's Shoe Repair here. Virgil W. Martin was the owner. At the time of the 1981 historic buildings survey, a "Shoe Service" occupied the building.
